Canopy Draping at Monteverdi Tuscany: A Two-Day Luxury Wedding in the Val d'Orcia

Updated: 13 hours ago
On 31 August and 1 September 2026 we draped a two-day luxury Tuscan wedding at Monteverdi Tuscany, the restored medieval village in Castiglioncello del Trinoro, for Mariposa Events Company and their couple, Madeline and Noah. Over two days we draped three sites with seven separate fabric treatments: a white canopy over the village piazza for the welcome party, then a deep bordeaux wedding dinner in the lower gardens.

Day one: a canopy over the piazza
The welcome party took place in the piazza outside the village's old church. The brief was white, cream and natural: soft enough to sit with the old stone, and strong enough to make a public square feel distinctly theirs.
The piazza measures 25 by 20 metres, and the canopy hung at 4 metres. We used 225 metres of sheer white muslin in 1.5- and 3-metre widths, set in wide swags so the ceiling reads as movement rather than a flat cover.
Below it, nine white satin tablecloths at 340 × 340 cm were finished with soft bustles and swags. We also made a bespoke welcome sign with the couple's initials, draped in the same fabric, and dressed six lounge sets and a freestanding photo backdrop in white satin.
Draping where there is nothing to fix to
A medieval village has no rigging points, and you can't drill into ancient buildings. We used the piazza's trees as anchor points, with protection on every trunk against the pull of the wire.
The second challenge was wind. At Monteverdi's elevation there is a steady breeze, and even a small breeze turns a canopy into a sail. We worked slowly, put safety first, and brought more than one type of rigging system so there was always a back-up.
For planners: for any outdoor canopy, ask two questions early. What can we fix to, and how windy does it get at that altitude in the evening? The answers decide the design.

Day two: bordeaux opulence in the gardens
The wedding moved to the lower gardens, with Tuscan views, candelabras and bistro lights. The palette was deep red, wine and berry, and the brief was opulence and richness.
Nine imperial tables were dressed in burgundy cotton Panama, a basket-weave fabric with real body, with full bustles and heavy drape at both ends. The opulence table and the cake table carried heavy drape, bustles and swags, with 4 × 4 metres of aubergine satin on the dessert table. A 2.5-metre-high, 2-metre-wide freestanding photo backdrop in the same burgundy tied it together.

Placing a photo backdrop outdoors
The lawn was uneven, and the backdrop had to look right when the photos were taken, not when we installed it. We worked out where the sun would be at that time of day and placed the backdrop to suit.
For planners: tell your draping team when the photos will be taken. Light decides where a backdrop goes.

The project in numbers
Three sites, two days, seven fabric treatments
Piazza: 25 × 20 m, canopy at 4 m, 225 m of white muslin
9 white satin and 9 burgundy Panama tablecloths
50 m of 3-metre-wide white satin for the backdrop and six lounge sets
Crew of four, seven hours on site each day
First consultation November 2025, fabric delivered July 2026: a nine-month lead time
What the couple said
"Table & Tulle helped my husband and I have our dream wedding! They created fabric installations for tables, canopies, and free standing photo backgrounds that turned Tuscan wedding into a weekend of opulence. It was a pleasure to work with them and I could not recommend them more to anyone who is looking for high end fabric design." — Madeline
A short checklist for outdoor draping in Tuscany
Find out what you can fix to: trees, walls, posts or nothing at all.
Plan for wind, especially at hilltop venues.
Protect trees with sleeves or padding against the pull of the wire.
Use wire, Gripple locks and crimp clamps to hold fabric in its final position.
Place photo backdrops for the light at photo time.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drape an outdoor space with no structure? Yes. We rig to trees and existing features with protected wire, and we bring back-up rigging in case the first plan doesn't work on site.
What happens if it's windy? We design for it. Swag depth, fixing points and tensioning are planned around the site's exposure, so fabric moves softly without becoming a sail.
How far ahead should we book? For a multi-day wedding, as early as you can. This one began nine months before the event.
Do you supply tablecloths as well as draping? Yes. We supplied every tablecloth for this wedding, so the tables and the draping were designed as one scheme.
Do you only work on Lake Como? No. We're based on Lake Como and work across Italy, including Tuscany and Lake Garda, and in Europe.
